Anatomical considerations

Our recent research work completely challenges the accepted understanding of the distal anatomy of the pectoralis major.

The clavicular portion of the pectoralis major does not take part at all in forming the pectoralis major tendon.

The pectoralis major tendon therefore measures between 3 and 4 cm in length, 4 to 5 cm in height, and 2 to 3 mm in thickness.

The pectoralis major can thus be compared to a leaf on a branch.

In the large majority of cases (around 80%), an intact clavicular bundle persists even though the tendon itself is completely ruptured.
